Take-home, in-clinic, or both
Take-home trays give the better result for most people, because the gel is in contact with the teeth for hours rather than minutes and the shade change is gradual enough to stop where you want it. Two to three weeks of overnight wear is typical; heavier staining takes six.
In-clinic whitening does the same job in a single ninety-minute visit and suits people with a date in the diary. It is more likely to cause short-term sensitivity, and the result holds better if you follow it with a week of tray wear — which is why we usually sell them together.
What whitening cannot do: change the colour of crowns, veneers or white fillings. If you have visible restorations at the front we whiten first, wait two weeks for the shade to stabilise, then replace them to match. In that order, never the other way round.
Common questions
Not at the concentrations a dentist is permitted to prescribe. Whitening gel works by oxidising the stain molecules inside the tooth; the enamel structure itself is unaffected. Shop-bought kits sold as whitening that rely on abrasives are a different matter.
Two to three years before most people want a top-up, less if you drink a lot of red wine, tea or coffee. Because you keep the trays, a refresh is a £45 syringe and three nights rather than starting again.
It is illegal in the UK for anyone other than a dental professional to supply gel above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, so a legal online kit is too weak to work. The illegal ones are the ones that burn gums.
