A bridge replaces a missing tooth by borrowing support from the teeth either side. It is the right answer when those neighbours already carry crowns — and the wrong one when they are untouched, which is when we will point you at an implant instead.
A conventional bridge crowns the teeth on both sides of the gap and carries a replacement tooth between them. Strong, predictable, and it costs you the outer surface of two healthy teeth if they were previously untouched. That is the trade we want you to make deliberately.
An adhesive bridge — sometimes called a Maryland bridge — bonds a thin metal or ceramic wing to the back of one neighbouring tooth. Almost nothing is removed. It is less robust and can debond, but it is reversible, and for a missing upper lateral incisor in a young adult it is very often the better choice.
Where both neighbours are sound and healthy, we will usually recommend a single implant instead. It costs more up front and it does not touch the teeth either side, which over thirty years is normally the cheaper decision.
If the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge uses work that is already done and is usually the better value. If they are untouched, an implant avoids cutting them down. We will give you both prices and a recommendation in writing.
Superfloss or interdental brushes threaded beneath the false tooth, once a day. This is not optional — decay on the supporting teeth under a bridge is the most common way a bridge fails, and it is invisible until it is serious.
Ten to fifteen years is typical for a conventional bridge that is kept clean. Adhesive bridges debond more often but can usually be re-bonded rather than remade.

A crown covers a tooth that has too little of itself left to survive another filling. Ours are ceramic or zirconia depending on where the tooth sits, carry a five-year guarantee, and can usually be done in one visit.
