Hygiene

Grace Chen sees hygiene patients four days a week at Harrogate and Tuesdays at Wetherby. Airflow stain removal is part of the appointment rather than a £30 upsell at the end of it.

What the appointment involves

Forty minutes. A periodontal chart first — six measurements per tooth, recorded so we can compare it with last time rather than relying on an impression. Then ultrasonic scaling above and below the gum, airflow to lift staining from tea, coffee and tobacco, and a polish.

You will be shown what the chart found, on screen, including the two or three places you are consistently missing. Almost everybody has them and they are almost always the same spots year after year.

Where the chart shows pockets deeper than 4mm we will book longer appointments for root surface debridement rather than trying to do it inside a routine slot. That is a different treatment at a different price and we will say so before starting it.

Common questions

Between three and six months depending on what the periodontal chart shows, not a fixed interval for everyone. Patients with stable gums and low staining go six-monthly; smokers, diabetics and anyone with a history of gum disease do better at three or four.

Sensitivity around exposed root surfaces is the usual complaint, and topical or local anaesthetic is available at no extra cost if you want it. Say so at the start rather than enduring it — plenty of people do.

Yes. You do not need a dentist referral and you do not need to be registered with us. We do ask for a dental examination within the last two years so we are not cleaning around undiagnosed decay.
