What the five months actually contain

An assessment with a CBCT scan (£145, redeemed against treatment). Placement, which takes about an hour and is usually flapless because the guide makes a flap unnecessary. Then three to four months while the bone integrates with the implant surface — the part that cannot be hurried and the reason the timeline looks long.

After integration, a short appointment to expose the implant and fit a healing abutment, two weeks for the gum to shape around it, then a scan and the crown. The last two visits are quick and neither needs anaesthetic.

Where the tooth is in the smile line, a temporary tooth is fitted the same day as placement so you never have a visible gap. Back teeth are usually left uncovered to heal, because a temporary there interferes with healing more than it helps.

Common questions

If the teeth either side are untouched, an implant, because a bridge would mean cutting them down. If they already carry crowns, a bridge uses work that is already done and costs half as much.

Published figures for guided single implants in healthy non-smokers are around 95–98% at ten years. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and untreated gum disease all move that number, which is why the assessment checks for them.

Closer than any alternative. The difference nobody mentions is that an implant has no periodontal ligament, so it does not have the tiny amount of give a natural tooth has. Most people stop noticing within a fortnight.
