Same day: swelling of the face or under the jaw, pain that has stopped you sleeping, a tooth knocked out, uncontrolled bleeding after an extraction, or a broken front tooth. Facial swelling that is spreading toward the eye or affecting your breathing or swallowing is A&E, not us.
Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it in milk if it is dirty, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a handkerchief. If you cannot, keep it in milk and ring immediately. The first thirty minutes decide whether it survives.
Within a few days: a lost crown or filling that is not painful, a broken denture, an aching tooth that settles with painkillers. Take ibuprofen and paracetamol together at the correct doses rather than doubling either — that combination is considerably more effective than either alone.
