Crowns

A crown covers a tooth that has too little of itself left to survive another filling. Ours are ceramic or zirconia depending on where the tooth sits, carry a five-year guarantee, and can usually be done in one visit.

When a crown is the right answer

The rule of thumb is how much natural tooth remains around the outside. Once a filling is wider than about half the biting surface, or a cusp has already broken, the remaining walls flex every time you chew and eventually one of them splits. A crown holds the whole tooth together instead of wedging it apart.

Root-treated back teeth are the clearest case. A molar that has had a root canal and no crown is markedly more likely to fracture, and a vertical root fracture is not repairable — the tooth comes out. That is why we push for a crown after endodontic treatment and why we do not charge extra to do it quickly.

The material depends on position. Lithium disilicate for anything in the smile line, because it transmits light the way enamel does. Zirconia for heavy grinders and for second molars, where strength matters more than translucency.

Common questions

The material and the route, not the quality. A same-day crown is milled here from a ceramic block in about ninety minutes. A laboratory crown is made by our technician in Leeds over two weeks and can be layered by hand, which matters for a front tooth next to natural teeth. Both are £850.

On a back tooth nobody will see it. On a front tooth, matching a single central incisor to its neighbour is the hardest thing in dentistry, and that is the case we send to the laboratory with photographs rather than mill in an hour.

If the crown fails within five years and you have kept the hygiene appointments in your maintenance plan, we remake it and you pay nothing. It does not cover accidental damage, or grinding damage where a night guard was recommended and declined.
