What we look for, and what helps
Flat wear facets that match between upper and lower teeth, scalloped edges on the tongue, a ridge along the inside of the cheeks, and hypertrophied masseter muscles that make the jaw look square. Most people who grind do not know they do; their partner usually does.
A hard acrylic night guard does not stop the grinding — nothing does — but it puts a replaceable piece of plastic between your teeth instead of enamel. Ours are scanned rather than impressioned and made to cover the full arch, because partial coverage guards let the uncovered teeth over-erupt.
Where the muscle itself is the problem — morning jaw ache, headaches at the temples, a jaw that is tired by lunchtime — injections into the masseter are genuinely effective. Dr Priya Raghavan does these at £340 and they last three to four months. See jaw clenching.
Common questions
You can, and it is better than nothing for a few months. They are soft, which makes many people chew them harder, they cover only some teeth, and they wear through in a year. For an ongoing problem the made one is cheaper over five years.
Partly, and also by sleep-disordered breathing, some medications and alcohol. If you snore heavily or wake unrefreshed we will suggest a sleep assessment rather than treating the teeth in isolation.
A click without pain or locking is common and usually needs monitoring rather than treatment. Pain, locking, or a jaw that will not open past two fingers needs looking at, and we will refer to a maxillofacial unit where appropriate.
