What it is good at, and what it is not
Bonding is the least invasive thing on this page. Nothing is removed — the composite is etched and bonded onto the existing enamel and shaped by hand under magnification. If you dislike it, it can be polished off and you have exactly the tooth you started with.
It is excellent for small gaps, chipped incisal edges, teeth worn short by grinding, and the peg-shaped lateral incisors that are commoner than most people realise. Six upper front teeth in one appointment of about three hours is a typical case.
Its limits are colour and lifespan. Composite picks up stain at the margins over time and dulls, so expect to have it polished annually and refreshed every five to seven years. Where you need something that holds its colour for a decade, that is porcelain.
Common questions
Bonding first, almost always. It is a third of the price, removes no tooth, and can be redone. Veneers are the answer when the underlying colour is too dark to mask, or when the shape change needed is beyond what bonding can hold.
At the margins, gradually, and faster if you smoke or drink a lot of red wine or coffee. An annual polish at your hygiene appointment keeps it looking new for years and costs nothing extra.
Yes. Composite does not lighten, so we whiten, wait two weeks for the shade to settle, then match the bonding to the new colour. Doing it the other way round means redoing the bonding.
