Bone
Grafting

Where the scan shows there is not enough bone to hold an implant safely. Quoted after the scan, at the consultation, in writing — never introduced as a surprise on the day of surgery.

  • £450 Socket preservation
  • £900–£1,400 Ridge augmentation
  • £1,200–£1,800 Sinus lift
  • 4–6 months Healing

Three situations, three procedures

Socket preservation (£450), placed at the time of an extraction. The ridge loses most of its width in the year after a tooth comes out, and a graft into the socket keeps it. If an implant is even possible in your future, this is the cheapest thing you will ever do for it.

Ridge augmentation (£900–£1,400), where the bone is already too thin. Grafting material and a membrane are placed and left to consolidate for four to six months before the implant goes in. It adds a surgery and about half a year to the timeline.

Sinus lift (£1,200–£1,800), for upper back teeth where the sinus floor has dropped into the space the implant needs. A small lift can be done through the implant site at the same appointment; a larger one is a separate procedure with its own healing period.

Common questions

Usually processed bovine mineral, which is the most researched material available and acts as a scaffold your own bone grows into. Synthetic alternatives are available if you would prefer, and we will discuss both at the consultation.

Most people do not. It is decided by the CBCT scan, which is why the assessment includes one — measuring bone from a flat x-ray is guesswork, and guessing here is how implants end up in the sinus.

Somewhat, and more swollen — expect four or five days rather than two or three, with visible swelling for a week after a larger graft. It is managed with ibuprofen and, for the bigger procedures, a short course of antibiotics.
