The trial smile comes first
Veneers are irreversible. Even a minimal preparation removes a layer of enamel that does not grow back, and a tooth that has been prepared for a veneer will need a veneer or a crown for the rest of your life. That is a decision worth making with more than a photograph to go on.
So we photograph and scan, design the proposed shape digitally, and bond a temporary composite mock-up straight over your existing teeth. Nothing is removed at that stage. You wear it home, eat with it, see it in daylight and in photographs and in front of people who know your face.
Most people change something — a little less length, a squarer corner, a shade down from where they started. Then the porcelain is made to the design you have already lived with. If you decide against the whole idea, the mock-up lifts off and you have lost the consultation fee and nothing else.
Common questions
No. That is a preparation for full crowns, and it is what people are seeing in the photographs that circulate online — usually from overseas clinics fitting twenty crowns in a week. A minimal-prep veneer removes a fraction of a millimetre of enamel.
However many show when you smile widely, which for most people is six to ten uppers. Doing four and leaving the canines visibly different is the most common way a veneer case ends up looking like veneers.
Within five years, with hygiene appointments kept, we remake it at no charge. Porcelain is strong in compression and brittle in shear, so the practical advice is the same as for natural teeth: no ice, no fingernails, and a night guard if you grind.
